“I feel very lucky…” Kiadora Durocher, age 12, says about being able to attend Camp Chief Hector YMCA because of the Strong Kids Campaign.
YMCA Strong Kids is an annual fundraising initiative to raise money to provide kids the opportunities they need to reach their full potential at YMCA.
Kelly Durocher, Kiadora’s mom, says she wouldn’t be able to afford to send Kiadora to camp without this funding. “It goes to kids who don’t get trips, who don’t have other experiences like this. This is just for her and it is really special.”
Time at camp has allowed Kiadora to grow; to come out of her shell. “Every time I pick her up from camp she is so much more independent, confident and grown up, she always changes in those two weeks,” says Kelly.
“If I could, I would spend the entire summer there if possible,” Kiadora says with a smile, reflecting on her past six summers at Camp Chief Hector YMCA. “There is no other place I want to be. It teaches you different things. I have made new friends that I probably would never have met unless I went to camp,” she says.
“Camp has really had an impact on how I see nature and how I see the world.”
It is because of the Strong Kids Campaign that Kiadora can have this experience. Mom says, “I can’t stress how thankful I am for this program. Camp is something you will never forget, something that will stick with you forever.”
